Back to School Letter

Greetings, BearCats,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year. I hope you have had a restful summer and are ready to make this year one of the best ever. With the start of this year, we have many opportunities and challenges ahead of us to improve the lives of our students at Forest Municipal School District.

Our district’s theme for this school year is “Super Heros!” To help ensure student success in this new year, we must work diligently every day to achieve our goal of graduating every student college and career ready.

After the last year of functioning between virtual, a hybrid setting, and in-person schooling, we are excited to return to five full days of in-person instruction in the building. Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic we will continue to implement mitigation measures as established by the Mississippi Department of Health and the CDC (Center for Disease Control.) This will include the requirement for all students to wear masks while indoors and on the buses, social distancing where practicable, and regular handwashing and/or access to hand sanitizers. We will continue to implement mitigation measures as we are committed to ensure that our staff and students’ safety and well-being are prioritized.

Each school year brings many challenges, rewards, and moments of happiness and disappointments. This year we will renew our commitment to excellence in all that we do, as we seek to provide world class instruction daily with the expectation that all students can learn and succeed. We will continue to provide students with opportunities to address academic deficiencies, to build numeracy and literacy skills, to make up for missing credits, to be college or work force prepared, and to have the opportunity to participate in rigorous academic classes. We will continue to implement initiatives to promote teaching and learning, and to engage all our stakeholders in the process of educating ALL students. A major initiative for this year is to address the concern of student literacy amongst our English Language Learner population. We look forward to partnering with our stakeholders in this effort which will positively impact student performance in every content area, and in their overall academic growth and development. Working together as a collective team, I KNOW that we can accomplish this and SO MUCH MORE!!

I am excited about all that this new school year has to offer. As a leader during these challenging times, making hard decisions can be difficult and unpopular. My top priority, along with the board of education, is to take care of the needs of ALL STUDENTS EQUITABLY. I ask you to join me in making this your number one priority as well. The Forest Municipal School district family is committed to excellence and being a world class institution of teaching and learning.

It is going to be an amazing year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Karen Norwood
